Environment Forum
Proposal For A New Cluster Within The Micah Network:
Topic: Environment
In spite of the seriousness of the current environmental crisis affecting all of our planet, and the existence of a strong biblical basis for environmental responsibility, there has been a limited response of the Evangelical Church to this issue which disproportionately affects the poor and marginalised. This situation presents a challenge to the Church, but at the same time an enormous opportunity to influence the churches through the Micah Network.
Hypothesis:
The members of evangelical churches would do more in response to the present environmental crisis, both on a personal level and on a wider basis, if:
- They were adequately informed (there’s great lack of awareness on the subject)
- They had access to materials and resources that would help them relate their faith and their life-styles to this issue, from a biblical perspective
- They had access to practical and creative examples of how to contribute practically to protecting the environment
- They felt that they were part of a bigger effort (i.e. that they are not alone or isolated in their own efforts).
Purpose:
As members of this Network cluster, to promote amongst the evangelical churches and organisations:
- Reflection and commitment concerning the critical environmental crisis, and our urgent and key role as believers in responding to it.
- Joint, exemplary and strategic action in light of a specific environmental issue, of common concern between the members of the network
Methodology:
- Through the application of a questionnaire, identify people within the Micah Network who are commited to the environment, and are willing to work together as part of the ‘Environment’ cluster
- Jointly define:
- a) which strategic environmental topic to cover as a network; and
- b) the respective strategies and timetables for activities.
- Bring together and publicise a pool of resources (human, material, bibliographical, liturgical, prayers, confessions, music, etc.), making them available to interested individuals and faith communities (This could include a special section in the Micah Network website, and other mechanisms for sharing and improving these resources).
- Carry out a joint campaign that unites churches around a key environmental theme, with a view to bring about lifestyle changes as well as advocacy actions to influence government and other national and international agencies.
